VBS Leadership

I sent this email to Deanna B. today; she is considering a position in our VBS Leadership Team and wanted some info on the duties we are looking to fill.

Deanna,

I wanted to write down some thoughts for you about some of the VBS leadership positions we are working on finding the right people for. We had a quick meeting this weekend with several people who have a heart for certain areas, and I hope we can find the right place for yours as well. The other people we’re primarily working with right now are Deanna D. and Katrina O. Both have expressed an interest in being involved in our VBS leadership team that we are putting together. Deanna is really interested in helping out with promoting it and Katrina is all into the decorations thing. But more than those specific roles, we’re looking for a team of people with a unified heart for the kids this will touch who are willing to work together to organize, plan, and make this happen this year. Those two women (hopefully), along with Gordon P. and Mark L., and possibly yourself, would make an awesome team, in my opinion.

I’ll be honest with you; the key position we’re looking to fill right now is what’s called our “VBS Director.” Big title, I know. It could just as well be called our VBS Coordinator, Facilitator, or Team Leader… or for that matter, Official VBS Delegator. J We need a person with a heart for this ministry who is willing to be the point person, the go-to person, the person who make sure we “get it done.” Now as I say that, I don’t want to make you think that this person is the one who is going to DO IT ALL. I’m learning in my role as our Sunday School Director that that is probably one of the worst ways to try to lead. This is the person who would make sure communication happens, would make sure promotion happens, would make sure we keep on track in terms of dates and preparation, and make sure the focus stays on reaching out to the kids and families that will be part of this ministry.

The VBS program we are running this year has a great book that will walk this person through the specific duties of this job. It helps you set dates, gives you advice on what to talk about, when, and why. It is a great resource, and Gordon could show it to you on Sunday if you’d like. This person will also have at their disposal some other previous leaders of VBS – Sandi L., Carol J., and others – who are not able to lead this year but are willing to answer questions, give some direction, or step back and watch from the sideline when we find a person who wants to run with this.

So that’s the primary role we’re still looking to fill. There are a number of other “duties” that we will still need someone to perform, but I am going to leave most of that up to the team we put together to divvy up amongst themselves based on their hearts and gifts.

I would love to have you join this developing team. It is definitely going to be fresh and a bit inexperienced, and with the support we will be giving it from those who’ve done it before and our working Sunday School team, I think we’ve got more potential this year than we have in recent years.

If you have any questions, feel free to email or call myself or Gordon about them. I’ve talked to Gordon and he’d be glad to talk with you face-to-face about any of this after church on Sunday. We’ve tentatively picked the week of July 13-18 for VBS this year, but that is still a bit flexible. We will also be having our first VBS team meeting this month as well to get everybody together and on the same page in terms of commitment. I will probably be involved as that as part of my role of Sunday School director, but after that, I am going to step back and hand the reigns to the team, and Gordon will become the key link between our Sunday School ministry and VBS.

So…. Let me know if you have any questions, thoughts, or decisions on this. Again, I appreciate your willingness to consider this position or any other place your heart would drive you, and I would love to welcome you to this team, which honestly, I think, is one of the most happenin’ places to be right now! J (but that’s a personal opinion)

Chet
